Dr. Kurt AhrensThroughout my college and graduate school years, in which I was preparing for a career in scientific research, I was always wondering why science education in the U.S. seemed inadequate. Fast-forward a decade or two: as a parent, I became more interested in the public school system and how it works (for better or worse). After meeting a neighbor who was trying to start a new school, I saw that project- and competency-based education held a lot of potential and I was inspired to get teaching credentials. With a brief detour teaching biology at Arcadia University, I finally arrived at The U School, where I hope to develop effective curricula in science, with an emphasis on students learning the process of science, which is simply a highly effective method for real-world problem solving.
